There’s nothing like camping in a country park to unwind.
When I arrive at Ferry Meadows, I throw away the car keys too.
This is a huge site, spanning both sides of the road that borders the Nene Valley Country Park. The wardens are diligent, but friendly.
A pure joy for anyone who enjoys activity hols.
Steam trains, boating lakes, river fishing, two golf courses and a watersports centre for canoeing, sailing and windsurfing cater for the entire family.
The park’s also a wildlife haven. Kids can feed and watch the wildfowl. For serious bird watchers, the campsite has its own bird hides by the River Nene.
Families wanting to explore the Nene Valley can choose to travel by steam train or bike. More than 60 miles of off-road cycleway offer a safe way for the entire family to enjoy a day off-site.
If cycling’s too tiring, the famous Nene Railway runs from Ferry Meadows to the City of Peterborough every 30 minutes. The City provides everything for the family overdosed on fresh air and fishing.
It’s also possible to walk or cycle the three miles into Peterborough along the railway line and river path. The Peterborough Beer Festival in August is a highlight of the year.
There are 265 pitches here, 104 of them hardstanding. The west side has most of the hardstanding and is probably the quieter side, as larger families tend to choose the east-side grassy pitches.
