Q) How do I find a campsite here?

A) If you know the location, click on the national flag logos and then the regional and county areas to find a choice of sites. If you are looking specifically for rivers or beaches etc. use the ‘select category’ drop down menu in the side bar to choose the type of camping holiday you are looking for.

Q) Which sites take tents, caravans or motorhomes?

A) Give them a call. 99 per cent of the sites listed here carry a phone number. Managers and owners change their policies throughout the year and often make exceptions to the rule. It never hurts to ask. If they can’t help they will often know a neighbouring campsite that can accommodate.

A) Lincolnshire holds the record for the most sites that sit right on the water, with 28.

Q) Which region has the most campsites on water?

A) The south west is the best with 203 waterside campsites listed on these pages. The south west region also has the highest number of campsites within 500 metres of water with 254 listed here.

Q) Which region of England has the least amount of campsites on water?

A) Although famous for the Lake District, the North West has just 38 sites on the waterside here. But they are all beautiful!

Q) Which are the best clubs to join for camping.

A) The Caravan Club (CC) is the biggest, the Camping and Caravanning Club (C&CC) is the oldest. I’ve listed their respective camps by water here.

The National Trust owns about 50 campsites. The charity has 15 on or near water and I’ve listed them here.

… Errrr, buying expensive rainwear might not be top of most campers’ to-do-list. But getting the right gear is the single most important factor to enjoying the great British outdoors.

Quality rainwear helps me camp 12 months a year – which is why I try to get it right.

Although it’s a multi billion pound industry, the best quality rainwear doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

Patents protecting the fabric Gortex recently expired, which has allowed more competitive manufacturers to enter the market.

My favourite all-weather system for winter is made up of four layers on top, and usually three below. I wear Helly Hanson as a base layer. Cheapo tracksuit bottoms or jeans go over the leggings. I carry a light and cheap Montane waterproof trousers in a bag in case of rain.

On top I wear a very cheap (usually from a second hand shop) fleece. Thickness depends on how low below zero it is. My main coat is always a soft shell; a non waterproof and breathable jacket. Again, my favourite is Berghaus with a pertex shell and a Primaloft filling for about £100. This is a fantastic coat and I’m never without it. Pertex can cope with pretty heavy, but short showers. The benefit of pertex is I don’t sweat inside. And Primaloft is super warm filling. I carry a Montane, Event hard shell in a small backpack in case the rain lasts all day. Total outlay, about £300. That little lot will last me for about five years and will cope with everything well below -10.
