about ABOUT

We’ve always loved travelling, camping, swimming, fishing and boats.

Bought a Hymer motorhome six years ago, a sailing dingy a year later, and then two canoes.

Although we live on an island surrounded by sea, divided by thousands of rivers and filled with more than 1,000 lakes, many long hours followed, looking: first for books that listed the UK’s best waterside campsites. Then, when it dawned on us that no comprehensive directory existed, we spent the next few years travelling and trawling local authority records, British Waterways maps and Google Earth for anything that resembled a ‘camp on water’ – whether that be a giant holiday park on the coast or the smallest certified location with a few pitches by the river bank.

Listed here are some of the best we’ve found  - more than 2,000 camps, which rest on the waterside. They are placed into regional and county areas as well as catergorized under their type: ie river, lake etc..

Because so many good sites were within a spit of water (not actually next to it) we decided to include them in a separate section listed ‘within 500 metres’ in the regional files. Some are worth a look, others not so. We haven’t visited them all, so you decide.

This guide is of course flawed. Time ensures everything remains in a state of change, but that’s kind of what makes it exciting. Good campsites get bad, poor ones get sold, others close and some get turned into luxury apartments.

If you notice change, broken links or want to contribute your own experiences use the comment tool.

Please try to be constructive, rather than destructive – even if yours was truly the holiday from hell.

Thank-you to all the wardens, camp owners, fellow travellers and locals who continue to share their knowledge, experience and thoughts.

We are still searching for our perfect campsite on water, but plan to have more fun looking. Let us know if you think you have found yours and send some photos.

Some of our faves are all listed here. Enjoy discovering them – the good, the bad and the rest.
